Sant Josep Obrer hosted a distinguished guest on 28 October 2025 as Member of the European Parliament Alicia Homs returned to her former school to meet with Year 11 students.

The visit formed part of the school’s ongoing participation in the EU co-funded Jean Monnet project “European values and migration (EUAMI)”, aimed at fostering awareness of European values, active citizenship among young people and migration policies.

For Sant Josep Obrer, the event had a special resonance. Ms. Homs, who grew up in Mallorca and once sat in the same classrooms as the students she addressed, stands as a clear example of how local roots can lead to significant responsibilities within the European Union. Her presence underscored the school’s belief that “with SJO, you can go places”.

During her address, Ms. Homs provided students with an inside look at the functioning of the European Parliament. She explained the legislative process, the role of parliamentary committees, and the impact that EU-level decisions have on the everyday lives of citizens.

Her visit highlighted the essential role of maintaining the EU’s proximity to its territories. Encounters between MEPs and local communities, especially in schools, help demystify the EU and bring its institutions closer to younger generations.

By engaging directly with students, Ms. Homs contributed to a clearer understanding of what the European Union is, how it operates, and why its work matters to young citizens from Mallorca to the rest of Europe.
