In a dynamic blend of history, politics, and geography, students at Liceo Machiavelli embarked on an enlightening journey delving into the European Union under the EUPress project. This comprehensive exploration not only shed light on the rich history of the EU but also provided valuable insights into its mechanisms and operations.

The project commenced examining the historical context that led to the formation of the European Union. Students immersed themselves in the aftermath of World War II, recognizing the devastation it wrought upon Europe and the subsequent necessity for unity and cooperation to ensure lasting peace and prosperity.

Through engaging discussions, we traced the origins of the EU back to the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), seeing how, over time, the EU evolved into a multifaceted entity committed to common values and objectives.

Central to the project was unraveling the mechanisms through which the European Union operates. Students delved into the institutions that form the backbone of the EU, including the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, and the European Court of Justice. Through role-playing exercises and simulated debates, students gained a deeper understanding of their respective roles and responsibilities in shaping EU policies and legislation.

Moreover, they explored key principles such as the four freedoms – free movement of goods, services, capital, and people – which underpin the EU’s single market. By examining case studies and real-life examples, they grasped the tangible impact of EU regulations on various aspects of daily life, from trade and employment to consumer rights and environmental protection.

Beyond the confines of history and politics, the project adopted a multidimensional approach by incorporating the geography of Europe into the exploration. Students embarked on a virtual tour of European capitals, familiarizing themselves with their cultural heritage, economic significance, and geopolitical dynamics. Through interactive mapping exercises, they gained a newfound appreciation for the diverse landscapes and climates that characterize the European continent.

In a spirit of friendly competition, they culminated the project with a series of games and quizzes using platforms such as Kahoot. These interactive sessions not only reinforced the understanding of key concepts but also fostered teamwork and collaboration among classmates. From identifying EU member states to deciphering the intricacies of EU institutions, each game served as a testament to the collective learning journey.

Students surely embarked on a journey of discovery that transcended the confines of the classroom and the exploration of the EU’s history and functionality has equipped them with a deeper appreciation for the principles of cooperation, solidarity, and unity that underpin the European project.
