As part of the EU Demos summer school, students from the 5 partner schools visited two key educational institutions in Brussels: the House of European History and Experience Europe. These visits gave them unique insights into both the shared past of the continent and the functioning of the European Union today.
At the House of European History, students journeyed through the complex and often turbulent events that shaped Europe – from the rise of nation states to the wars of the 20th century and the foundations of the European unification process. Through interactive exhibits and powerful storytelling, they gained a deeper understanding of how the idea of a united Europe emerged as a response to conflict and division. Many students reflected on the importance of memory, reconciliation, and shared values in shaping European identity.
Later, at Experience Europe, the students were introduced to the workings of the EU institutions, with a particular focus on the European Commission. Through interactive installations, digital simulations, and multilingual guides, they learned how the Commission proposes legislation, manages EU policies, and represents the interests of all Europeans. One highlight was a virtual meeting with Ursula von der Leyen – offering a symbolic moment of connection between young citizens and EU leadership.
Students came away with a stronger awareness of the democratic structures that support the European Union today. The visit sparked meaningful discussions on the role of young people in shaping the future of the EU and the importance of staying informed and involved in European affairs.
These educational experiences not only deepened the students’ historical understanding but also empowered them to see themselves as active participants in the European democratic process.
