The Students from Liceo Machiavelli under the EUPress projecs met the sailors of Marina Italiana to discover EU policy at sea, to learn about life at sea, sea pollution and the risks of bad behaviours that might harm people and nature.
On 26 October 2023, three classes from Liceo Niccolò Machiavelli (Rome) participated in a meeting with the Italian Navy. The theme of the meeting was road and nautical safety and was presented by Capt. vessel Nicola Guzzi and members of the navy. Through the projection of videos and with the support of multimedia files, the experts showed the classes how to respect road and nautical safety rules so that the number of accidents and fatalities can be reduced.
The meeting was very interesting and educational as they presented the history of the Italian Navy and the values underpinning the order of the Sailors; among these, worthy of attention are the principle of equality: anyone in difficulty at sea must be helped regardless of political affiliation, religion and nationality. The students were very impressed by the fact that they also intervene in support of endangered animals in fact their work is in close collaboration with the WWF and Marevivo associations.
One of the main values of the navy is the respect for human lives that leads to consciously embrace their career choice to the point that spend weeks away from their loved ones in order to save people in difficulties and to provide them with a ‘safe haven’.
Moreover, the sailors addressed another problem, the one of illegal immigration; Newspaper articles and news programmes often broadcast images of migrants at sea being rescued by national soldiers. Behind this action, however, may not be only an intervention initiated by the rescuing nation as reports often come from neighbouring European countries. All this shows close cooperation in acting in a European perspective to protect human lives.
