On February 26th, the EUDEMOS team of the 11th General Lyceum of Heraklion organized an innovative experiential dissemination event to share their experience from the Summer School in Sardinia. The initiative involved students from Class A7 of the same institution, along with 12 students and 2 teachers from the Model General Lyceum of Heraklion.

An interactive experience to explore European identity

The main objective of the event was to deepen knowledge of the history, institutions, and functioning of the European Union, as well as to reflect on the concept of European identity. Through interactive activities, students had the opportunity to enhance their critical thinking skills and strengthen their sense of belonging to the EU.

The event began with a Padlet questionnaire titled “What does being a citizen of the European Union mean to me?”, followed by a discussion on the results. Next, an EU-Identity Bingo activity encouraged interaction among participants.

Students then explored the political geography of the EU, identifying Member States on an interactive map and delving into key historical aspects, including Greece’s accession. A special focus was dedicated to European institutions and the major challenges faced by the EU, including global security and diplomacy, technological advancement, environmental protection and climate change, social cohesion and integration.

Debate and gamification for active participation

The experiential part of the event saw students divided into three groups, each representing a different Member State. Each team selected one of the EU’s challenges, formulated proposals for solutions, and engaged in a structured debate with another team. The final reflection highlighted the need for collective dialogue and transnational cooperation to address common issues.

The event concluded with an educational quiz on the KAHOOT platform, making the learning process even more engaging through gamification.

EUDEMOS: young protagonists of European citizenship

The EUDEMOS team played a key role not only in organising the event but also in its implementation, acting as multipliers of knowledge and experience. For the participants, the initiative represented a true journey into the European Union, seen through the eyes of their peers.

The event is part of the EUDEMOS programme, which aims to promote the development of European identity and encourage young people to actively participate in the EU’s democratic processes. A special thanks goes to the students who took part in the Summer School in Sardinia for sharing their experience, and to those who will participate in the Summer School in Brussels in July 2025.

With initiatives like this, the future of Europe relies on the awareness and engagement of new generations.
