On 5 February 2025, twenty-four high school students from Emiliyan Stanev School, accompanied by three teachers, visited the European Commission Representation in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The visit was organized by the European Union Information Centre, which frequently hosts informational sessions to educate young people about the EU’s activities, institutions, and policies.
During the visit, the students were introduced to the mission of the European Commission Representation in Bulgaria and the broader work of EU institutions. A key highlight of the session was an informative presentation on the critical issue of disinformation: false or misleading information deliberately spread to mislead or deceive for economic or political gain.
The presentation emphasized the harmful impact disinformation can have on society, including influencing public opinion, undermining democratic processes, and threatening public safety.

The session also explored the European Union’s robust efforts and policies to counter disinformation. The EU, indeed, is firmly committed to combating disinformation through a combination of regulation, awareness campaigns, and collaboration with media organizations and digital platforms.
Therefore, students had the opportunity to engage in discussions on how disinformation can be recognized and addressed, reinforcing the importance of media literacy and critical thinking in the digital age.
The House of Europe in Sofia, which houses both the European Commission Representation and the Bureau of the European Parliament in Bulgaria, continues to play a vital role in fostering dialogue and raising awareness about key EU policies.
By engaging the next generation in discussions on disinformation, the EU is strengthening its commitment to promoting an informed, resilient, and democratic society.
