As part of the EUdemos – Youth Engagement for Democracy project, funded under the Jean Monnet Actions, students were invited to reflect on the future of the European Union through a civic and participatory writing exercise.
In this context, the essay by Jose Miguel dos Santos Teixeira, titled “The EU I Want: A Vision for Social Cohesion and Inclusivity”, offers a thoughtful, passionate, and insightful contribution that places young people at the heart of a more just, cohesive, and inclusive Europe.
With a direct style and forward-looking perspective, the author expresses a genuine desire for social transformation, stressing the need for stronger youth participation, equitable access to education, protection of fundamental rights, and policies that foster well-being and respect for diversity.
His vision of a Union that leaves no one behind is interwoven with a powerful call for institutional responsibility and youthful creativity—capturing the very essence of the EU’s founding values and the spirit of the EUdemos project.
This essay is more than a political proposal: it is a call to action and a compelling example of how young voices can meaningfully shape the future of Europe.
The EU I Want: A Vision for Social Cohesion and Inclusivity
The European Union (EU) is more than a political and economic entity; it represents a
pledge of unity, collaboration, and opportunity. For the next generation, I want the EU to evolve
into a sign of social cohesion and inclusivity, ensuring no one is left behind regardless of their
background, beliefs, or circumstances. Young people play a crucial role in shaping this concept,
bringing fresh and innovative perspectives to the grown ups table.
Social cohesion is the key to intertwined societies, establishing trust, mutual respect,
and a sense of belonging. Yet, the EU faces challenges like rising inequality, social exclusion,
and polarization, which forms a threat to this cohesion. Addressing such issues requires an
intricate approach, integrating policy changes, initiatives, and intense civic engagement. Young
people are perfectly positioned to champion social cohesion. Through their digital devices, they
have access to tools that surpass borders and amplify voices, enabling them to advocate for
inclusivity on the biggest scale. By participating in EU policy making, youth can help social
division, creating inclusive communities, and guiding Europe to a more open and diverse
environment.
To truly follow the principles of inclusivity, the EU must prioritize youth engagement
in its decision-making processes. The establishment of platforms such as the European Youth
Portal and the Erasmus+ program is commendable, but it’s far from enough. Youth advisory
councils in each EU institution, made up of diverse representatives, can offer input on key
policies and ensure young people’s perspectives are included in the decision-making.
Leveraging technology, the EU can create accessible, multilingual digital platforms for youth
to share ideas, vote on initiatives, and engage in policy discussions. Encouraging youth-led
assemblies at both local and EU levels would allow young people to propose solutions to
pressing challenges. These assemblies could feed directly into the policymaking process,
ensuring that decisions reflect the concerns and aspirations of the younger generation.
To address the challenges of social exclusion and inequality, the EU needs to adopt
progressive policies that resonate with young people. Universal access to education and skills
training is critical, as education is the basis of social cohesion. The EU should invest in
programs that guarantee access to quality education for everyone, disregarding socio-
economic status. Initiatives like EU-wide vocational training and digital literacy programs can
equip youth with the skills needed to thrive in a world that is swiftly changing.
Reinforcing anti-discrimination laws is also indispensable. The EU must upgrade existing
frameworks to ensure equal opportunities for all, addressing matters for example gender
inequality, racism, and discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals through vigorous
legislation and awareness campaigns. The EU should provide grants and mentorship
opportunities for youth-led social enterprises. These initiatives can address local challenges,
promote inclusivity, and create jobs in marginalized communities. Social cohesion begins with
the well-being of the individuals, so the EU should invest in mental health support systems,
targeting youth, refugees, and other vulnerable groups. Accessible counseling services and
awareness campaigns might help promote a culture of care.
To further support social cohesion, the EU should emphasize cross-border cultural
exchange programs that instigate understanding among diverse communities. Festivals,
collaborative projects, and inter-community workshops highlight the beauty of cultural
diversity and decrease biases or stereotypes. Furthermore, the EU can partner with educational
institutions to incorporate lessons on inclusivity, history, and intercultural dialogue into school
curriculums, equipping the next generation with the tools to navigate and embrace diversity.
These efforts would guarantee that values of respect and mutual understanding are ingrained
across all member states.
The EU I want is one where individuals feel valued, respected, and empowered to
contribute to society. Achieving this vision demands bold actions, inclusive policies, and the
active collaboration of young people. By creating opportunities for youth to participate in
policy making, the EU can channel their energy, creativity, and commitment to found a future
that prioritizes social cohesion and inclusivity. Through collaboration, determination, and
innovation, young people can cause life-changing developments, ensuring the EU remains a
mark of unity and hope for generations to come. The time to act is now – together, we can
create the Europe we aspire to see.
