The Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) methodology is rapidly gaining recognition in schools and universities worldwide, offering an innovative way to bring internationalization into the classroom through technology. COIL enables students and educators from different countries to collaborate on joint projects online, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries, and opening new learning perspectives. This approach aligns seamlessly with the goals of Escola Secundária de Amarante, particularly within the framework of the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet EUdemos project, which focuses on fostering awareness of European Union values and institutions.

COIL: What is It?

COIL is a teaching method that connects students from various countries, allowing them to work together in digital environments on curriculum-integrated projects. By leveraging online tools like video conferencing, forums, and e-learning platforms, COIL creates a virtual space for students to engage with peers from different cultural backgrounds in real-time or asynchronously. This intercultural educational experience enhances students’ understanding of subjects ranging from social sciences to environmental studies, enriched by diverse perspectives.

COIL at Escola Secundária de Amarante: Addressing Inequalities

As part of the EUdemos project, students and teachers from Escola Secundária de Amarante recently participated in a COIL module focusing on inequalities. Led by teachers Cristina Afonso and Laura Pinheiro, sixteen 11th-grade students from various classes engaged in three online sessions with their peers from Liceo Leonardo Da Vinci in Pisa, Italy, held in March, April, and May. This COIL session explored gender inequalities within the European Union, where students presented materials, engaged in discussions, and shared insights about gender disparities.

This particular COIL was a collaborative effort within the broader Erasmus+ Jean Monnet EUdemos project, coordinated by the Royal University Institute for European Studies in Spain. The project brings together partners from Spain, Greece, Italy, and Poland, aiming to integrate EU-related topics into the curriculum. The goal is to build a deeper understanding of the European Union’s values and representative institutions among young people.

During these sessions, students discussed gender inequalities and presented on cultural aspects of their regions and countries. By tackling these important topics in a collaborative setting, they developed a variety of skills, from critical thinking to cross-cultural communication, all while building strong bonds with their European peers.

COIL: A Collaborative Learning Experience

The COIL methodology goes beyond traditional cultural exchanges, which often require physical travel, by offering a more inclusive and accessible alternative. Through COIL, students and educators from Escola Secundária de Amarante had the chance to connect with their European counterparts, even without leaving their own classrooms. This facilitated the exchange of ideas and perspectives on topics that resonate globally, such as gender equality, and promoted a sense of belonging to a larger European community.

The Benefits of COIL are multifaceted:

  • Global and Intercultural Competence: Students acquire intercultural skills, increasingly vital in today’s globalized workforce. By collaborating with peers from other countries, they gain sensitivity to diverse cultures and learn to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries.
  • Inclusivity and Accessibility: Unlike traditional exchange programs, COIL is accessible to all students, even those who may not have the resources to participate in physical mobility programs. This democratizes access to international education, making it possible for more students to benefit from global learning experiences.
  • Active and Engaged Learning: COIL encourages students to step outside their comfort zones, actively contributing to projects. The approach fosters discovery-based learning, where students become more involved and take ownership of their educational journey.

COIL: A Step Towards Educational Innovation

Escola Secundária de Amarante’s involvement in the EUdemos project through COIL represents an important step toward educational innovation. This experience not only supports the formation of students who can navigate a globalized world but also enriches the teaching practice of educators. Those involved in COIL gain new insights and develop networks with colleagues internationally, with whom they can share experiences and learn from each other.

Incorporating COIL into educational institutions is a valuable way to create a boundary-less learning community, enabling students to broaden their horizons and better understand the world around them. The EUdemos project is a testament to how COIL can cultivate a European spirit and foster active citizenship, proving that learning truly knows no bounds when technology and collaboration unite.
