The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at eCampus University is launching a call for papers for an international conference on the future of Europe.

The call for papers is now open for the international conference ‘The Follow-Up of the Conference on the Future of Europe: Translating Citizens’ Proposals into Law and Treaty Reform’, organised by the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at eCampus University. The event is scheduled for 24 and 25 September 2026 at the university’s Novedrate campus (Como).

The conference aims to stimulate debate among academics, researchers, experts and policy-makers on the follow-up to the recommendations arising from the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE), the first major experiment in participatory democracy on a European scale, which took place in 2021.

That initiative produced a comprehensive set of proposals across nine thematic areas – from climate to the economy, from democracy to migration – which the European Parliament sought to translate into a reform of the Treaties, adopting a resolution in November 2023 and a further one in November 2025, both of which have so far been ignored by the Council.

The conference will feature a panel dedicated to policy with institutional speakers, organised in collaboration with Focus Europe Italia, alongside a series of academic panels open to contributions selected through this call.

Scholars and researchers in law, political science, European studies, international relations and economics are invited to submit abstracts. Papers must address at least one of the following topics: the implementation of the CoFoE proposals by EU institutions; legislative proposals or regulations already adopted in response to the recommendations; proposals for Treaty reform; or the academic and public debate on implementation methods. Particular attention will be given to highly topical cross-cutting issues: defence and foreign policy, the digital transition, international trade, climate change, democracy and the Rule of Law.

The deadlines to note are as follows: abstracts (maximum 500 words) must be submitted by 30 May 2026; notifications of acceptance will be sent by 20 June; drafts of the full papers are due by 30 July 2026. Selected contributions will be published in a special issue or a dedicated section of a peer-reviewed academic journal, currently under selection.

Abstracts should be sent to the following addresses: roberto.castaldi@uniecampus.it and feuture@uniecampus.it
